The Toddler Environment

Garden Montessori School provides a prepared environment for Toddlers (18 - 36 months).

Children who are now comfortably walking are taken out of the Infant Room,
and moved to the toddler rooms which conform to their increased physical
needs. The children learn concentration, order, sequence, and skills
adapted to their development with practical life.

The practical life area:
Includes helping the toddlers to eat by themselves, drinking
from a cup, sweeping, cleaning tables, caring for plants and
animals, food preparation, dish washing, hand washing, window
cleaning, flower arranging and so on.

The sensorial area:
Allows children to use their senses to learn about the world. In
the toddler rooms, a child can learn to distinguish different
heights, lengths, weights, colors, sounds, smells, shapes, and
textures. The language, math, geography, and science areas
provide the child with ideas for their intellectual development.

 

The language area:
Includes miniature objects, language nomenclature cards
(parts of the body, family members, pets, components of the
neighborhood, the school, and the home), books (fiction,
poetry, nonfiction), spoken vocabulary enrichment exercises,
and other activities including art and music experiences.


We use a number of multi-sensory, sequential, and self-correcting
Montessori materials to facilitate learning. Materials for eye-hand
coordination such as threading, bead stringing, cubes on pegs, spheres
on horizontal pegs, puzzles, gluing, folding; and various practical life
exercises, coloring, painting and cooking projects.

The environment provides space for movement, space for individual
work, and space for group activities. Selected art placed low on the walls
for art appreciation, as well as creative art activities. Through song and
dance, and freedom of choice, the children have access to a variety of
large muscle activities that offer them opportunities to jump, climb,
balance, crawl, or skip.

Extended day programs available.

Half day hours include but are not restricted to:
9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Full day hours include but are not restricted to:
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Extended day hours are:
7:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
